The European Union has published the Mediterranean Initiative III as part of its Horizon Europe Work Programme 2026-2027, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development and innovation across the Southern Mediterranean region.

With an allocation of approximately €410 million, the initiative supports research and innovation in key shared regional priorities – health, climate change, and renewable energy – by focusing on 18 topics.

Building on the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Ministerial Declaration on R&I adopted in 2022, the success of the Mediterranean Initiative I launched in 2023, and the Mediterranean Initiative II launched in 2025, this third phase continues the EU’s strategic approach to co-creation and co-ownership with Mediterranean partner countries.

The programme is complemented by parallel efforts including the Euro-Med Hub for R&I, the Pact for the Mediterranean, the Working Groups under the UfM Platform, PRIMA partnership, the Blue Mission MED, and the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, all aligned with the Union for the Mediterranean’s R&I priorities.
