PRIMA (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area)

PRIMA is a ten-year Euro-Mediterranean initiative (2018–2028) established under Article 185 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, jointly undertaken by the European Union and its Participating States. It develops and deploys innovative, sustainable solutions for water management and agri-food systems in the Mediterranean basin, increasingly through the integrated Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus approach. With a total budget of around €709 million, combining the EU’s contribution (up to €325 million via Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) with the Participating States’ contribution (approximately €384 million), PRIMA launches annual transnational calls for proposals. Built on the principles of co-ownership, co-decision and co-financing, it brings together 20 countries from both shores of the Mediterranean, including EU Member States and non-EU partner countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye. The programme is implemented by the PRIMA Foundation, based in Barcelona.
