A public consultation has been launched to gather views on the future of the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), marking a key step towards shaping PRIMA 2, a renewed EU partnership for research and innovation in the Mediterranean.
Supported by the Horizon Europe project FUTURE4PRIMA, this initiative invites researchers, innovators, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the region to share their perspectives on how the partnership can better foster Mediterranean resilience through science, technology, and cooperation.
Since 2018, PRIMA has mobilised nearly €600 million and supported more than 260 projects tackling pressing regional challenges in water, agriculture, food systems, and ecosystems. It has established 127 demonstration sites, generated over 170 exploitable results, and strengthened science diplomacy and trust-building across the Mediterranean.
However, recent evaluations by the European Commission have highlighted areas for improvement, such as limited cross-border uptake of results, fragmented procedures, and the need for stronger leadership from Southern Mediterranean partners. PRIMA 2 aims to build on past successes while addressing these challenges to create a more balanced, efficient, and impactful partnership.
At this stage, no decisions have been made regarding PRIMA 2’s legal form, budget, or scope. The consultation will feed into ongoing reflections by Participating States and the European Commission, in the context of the upcoming 10th EU Framework Programme (FP10, 2028–2034).
The consultation is open from 19 September to 31 October 2025, and all interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate.
