On 7 July 2025, the EU and Jordan formally signed a renewed agreement under the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA). The ceremony in Brussels marked a key moment in strengthening regional cooperation on research, innovation, and science diplomacy.
The agreement was signed by Marc Lemaitre, Director‑General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, and Professor Mashhoor Al Refai, Secretary General of Jordan’s Higher Council for Science and Technology, on behalf of Jordan. Jordan will contribute approximately €4.5 million to the partnership from 2025 to 2027.
Jordan stands as the first partner country to complete all formal steps required to participate in PRIMA for the 2025–2027 cycle. Following ratification by Jordanian authorities in the coming months, the agreement will enter into force, paving the way for a new wave of collaborative Mediterranean research initiatives.
This renewed PRIMA framework aligns with the EU’s strategic vision for inclusive, sustainable innovation across the Euro‑Mediterranean region. It reinforces joint efforts in areas such as climate adaptation, sustainable food systems, and inclusive economic development, and highlights the role of research and innovation in advancing regional stability and well‑being.
